Most of you probably do not not know that my good friend JohnnyO is a CFE. That is Fraud Prevention Superhero talk for Certified Fraud Examiner. Johnny knows a thing or two about these rotten nasty fraudsters and their tricks.

Here are 5 tips to help protect yourself from fraud scams.

 1. Be skeptical all the time. In my humble opinion, too many americans seem to have lost a healthy sense of skepticism. More on that in a future post.

 2. Always do yourself a favor and whenever anyone who reaches out to you for anything; stop and think to yourself, do I know this person? Why would they make me this offer? Could this be a scam? Is it too good to be true?

 3. Do a bit of internet research of your own. Google the “Great Offer” and see if anyone else reports it as a scam. Use that internet to your benefit!

 4. Important! If an organization reaches out to you about a problem they want to help you fix be skeptical. Rarely do any companies reach out to help you. You almost always have to reach out to them.

 5. Finally and perhaps most important. If the IRS calls you to resolve an issue. Hang up the phone. The IRS does not call taxpayers to discuss issues. They do it by mail. Period. the IRS has said this publicly!
